Health & Social Care Impact Hearing, Day 31 - Care Home Managers
2

The Scottish COVID-inquiry is taking a much more person-based approach to the impacts of the pandemic, compared with the UK COVID-Inquiry.

On Tuesday 26th March 2024, the inquiry heard testimony from the ‘Independent Care Home Scotland’ group. The panel consisted of two Care Home Managers, a Principal Carer and a Care Home Director.

The evidence given was staggering. Details were provided on Government guidance that instructed:

Blanket ‘do not attempt CPR’ orders being placed on resident

Blanked ban on ambulance call outs to Care Homes

No care home call outs by GPs

GPs issuing remote prescriptions for ‘End-of-Life’ medication for Care Home residents

All of this combined to generate 2,500 excess deaths in Scottish Care Homes during the first lockdown, 23rd March 2020 to 31st May 2020.

Full recording of the testimony is within the link below. Discussions on DNR and end of life medication commences around the 1 hour mark.
